CHAPTER NINE

“I never thought I’d be doing this again,” Olivia said as she fidgeted with her gown. She was seated on the exam table, waiting impatiently for her doctor to get everything situated so they could see their baby on the ultrasound.

Nate was doing what he usually did during these appointments– pacing. He gave her a sheepish look. “Sorry.”

“It is a bit of a surprise, I’m sure,” Dr. Nassan said. She moved Olivia’s gown out of the way and applied gel to her stomach. “Let’s take a look, shall we?”

Olivia’s heart was pounding and she stuck out her hand. Nate was there to grab it almost instantly. They both stared at the screen without saying a word. The sound of a quick heartbeat filled the room.

“Looks like it’s just one this time,” Dr. Nassan said, smiling at Olivia.

“Is everything okay? Is the baby healthy?” Olivia asked nervously.

“Everything looks normal.” Dr. Nassan moved the wand around. “You said you thought you were about twelve weeks along but based on what I’m seeing, you are closer to sixteen weeks.”

“Sixteen?” Olivia gasped. “How is that possible? I’m not showing at all.”

Dr. Nassan continued to study the screen. “We’ll need to keep an eye on things, but there’s no need to worry yet. Just pay close attention to your eating habits and don’t skip meals. Try to manage your stress a little better.”

Olivia turned to Nate. “Try not to almost die again, okay?”

“I’ll do my best.” Nate smiled and ran his hand across her forehead. “I’ve been telling you for years to stop worrying so much.”

“Do you want to know the gender this time?” Dr. Nassan asked.

“Can you tell already?” Olivia and Nate hadn’t discussed that yet. With the twins, they hadn’t wanted to know. Nate had been adamant about being surprised. With Evelyn, they’d done the same thing.

Dr. Nassan nodded. “I’m getting a clear image.”

“What do you think?” Olivia asked Nate. “Should we mix it up this time?”

“Yeah, let’s go for it.” Nate grinned at her. “We’ve already got one of each, so this is just icing on the cake.”

“Bring it on, Doc,” Olivia said, turning back to the screen.

“It’s a boy,” Dr. Nassan said. She gestured to something on the screen that didn’t look significant to Olivia but apparently was the baby’s genitals. “He gave me a clear shot, so I think he wanted you to know.”

Olivia turned back to Nate. “Another little Nate. Dreams really do come true.”

Nate had unshed tears in his eyes as he kissed Olivia. “Thank you, Liv.”

“Don’t thank me. You’re the one who didn’t pay attention to your doctor’s instructions after the vasectomy,” Olivia said with a laugh.

“Please. Everyone knows that men don’t follow instructions.”

Dr. Nassan started wiping up the gel. “Everything looks really good, Olivia. We’ll run the usual bloodwork, but I think you can expect a normal pregnancy at this point.”

“You’re sure that there is nothing wrong? My last pregnancy also looked normal until the eighth month,” Olivia said, voicing the concern that had been haunting her since she first saw the positive pregnancy test.
